South Balham Ward

Luke Mathers

Luke, 30, has lived in the ward for several years. Like many Londoners and Balham residents, Luke moved to the area to enjoy the many amenities we are lucky to host. He can be spotted regularly across the ward, whether supporting local businesses or hospitality or enjoying our cherished Tooting Commons.

Luke has worked in the financial services industry for nearly a decade; with an educational background at state schools and with undergraduate and postgraduate law degrees. Previously a long term renter, and now a recent homeowner locally, he knows the difficulty many young Londoners and their families have getting on the housing ladder and establishing a home in Wandsworth.

Luke has campaigned on local issues for many years. Living in the ward for so long, he knows first hand the many issues that local residents face and has worked with colleagues to campaign and resolve them. This strong background of local knowledge and campaigning has provided him with strong local insight. He is humbled to say there is not a street in our ward he has not campaigned on. He wants to use that experience and knowledge to be a strong voice for our community.

Luke believes in local Conservative representation that is compassionate, aspirational and accountable to the needs and hopes of Wandsworth residents. He therefore firmly believes being a neighbour to the electorate is vital for strong and result-driven local representation and wishes to deliver that for you at the Town Hall.

Robert Hughes

Robert, 43, lives in the ward on Drakefield Road, with his wife Sameera and two young children. As a born and bred South Londoner, Robert has lived in Tooting for over 13 years where he’s a key part of the local community and can be seen frequently out and about enjoying the local shops and restaurants as well as ferrying his children to their local clubs.

Robert has worked for Transport for London (TfL) for over 17 years in the commercial function and has a core insight into how to get things delivered in a complex public sector setting. On top of the day job, Robert’s been a Magistrate since 2010, witnessing first- hand the devastating impact crime can have on communities and individuals.

Robert’s personal, commercial, and judicial experiences have shaped him into a ‘compassionate’ Conservative. He believes local elected representatives can make a difference to a person’s life and that councillors are most effective as local elected representatives when they have similar life experiences to those of their constituents and live in the neighbourhood. As a South Londoner and long-term resident of the area he believes he can successfully communicate to the Council the views of our community.
