Aled Richards-Jones has announced that he will step down as Conservative Group Leader and Leader of Wandsworth Council once a successor is appointed at the next Council meeting on 22 July.
In a statement to colleagues, Cllr Richards-Jones described the decision as “very difficult”, explaining that increasing professional responsibilities following his appointment as a law firm partner meant he could no longer devote the time the leadership role required.
“It has been an honour to serve as Group Leader for more than two years, following three years as Group Whip,” he said.
“Since I joined the partnership of a law firm last year, I have worked hard to balance increasing professional responsibilities with the demands of my political role. I felt it was right to continue leading the Group into the election and through the formation of the new administration.
“Over that time, the team into which I was recruited has achieved a level of success that has already outpaced our expectations, and as a result, my professional responsibilities have grown more quickly than expected. It is now clear to me that I can no longer give the role of Leader the time and focus it deserves alongside those responsibilities.”
The announcement comes after Cllr Richards-Jones led the Conservatives back into administration following their victory in the 2026 local elections. Reflecting on that achievement, he said he would “always be immensely proud” that the party had returned Wandsworth to Conservative control “at the first time of asking following our first defeat in 44 years”.
Thanking colleagues for their support, Cllr Richards-Jones said the Conservatives’ return to power was “the result of four years of sustained hard work in opposition, a strong manifesto, and the efforts of colleagues, candidates, activists and supporters across Putney, Tooting, Battersea and beyond”.
Cllr Richards-Jones highlighted the challenges facing the new administration and the decisive action taken since the election. Faced with what he described as “the depth of the underlying operational and financial problems” within the Council, Cllr Richards-Jones said he moved quickly to restore “grip, accountability and confidence”.
“From my first days as Leader-Elect, I took immediate steps to begin stabilising the Council’s position. These included launching a comprehensive spending review, freezing new recruitment, pausing non-essential expenditure, appointing a new cabinet, reshaping cabinet portfolios around the administration’s priorities, and making the Council's democratic processes more open and transparent”, he said.
While proud of those achievements, Cllr Richards-Jones said effective leadership also meant recognising when it was time for others to take the reins.
“These first, important steps are only the beginning of what will be a long and challenging process” he said.
“Wandsworth now needs sustained Conservative leadership to restore financial stability, improve everyday services, rebuild confidence in housing, unlock growth and investment, and deliver the change our residents voted for. That requires a Leader who can give the task the full time and focus it deserves.”
He also reflected on what he sees as a defining measure of leadership: “One of the clearest tests of leadership is building a strong team and nurturing the talent that will one day succeed you. Having secured the election of an outstanding group of Conservative councillors in May, I am confident that there is a deep well of talent ready to carry the baton forward during this crucial next phase.”
Although stepping down as Leader, he will remain an active councillor for Northcote ward and says he looks forward to “supporting the administration from the backbenches”.
In a statement, Wandsworth Conservatives thanked Richards-Jones for his leadership and service.
