
Four positive reasons to bring back the scheme:
1. It’s popular: The scheme was introduced in 2020 by the Conservative-Controlled Wandsworth Council, and was so popular it was repeated in 2021 and 2022. An independent survey showed that 88% of residents and three-quarters of local businesses backed the scheme.
2. It’s affordable: It wouldn’t add a penny to our council tax. Wandsworth Conservatives had set aside a budget – funded by levies from property developers – to install attractive gates and bollards on Northcote Road. This could be reinstated. Other costs, such as extra clear-up, are met by the businesses.
3. It’s vital for Northcote Road businesses: The scheme originally saved or created 120 jobs, and saved many businesses after covid. Now, with rising business rates, rent and wage costs, pedestrianising the road on summer weekends will give restaurants and shops more outdoor trading space and attract more customers to the road - revenue which will keep our local businesses going all year round.
